What inspired Sentimentery?

Insights from the team: Peter

The idea for Sentimentery came about in early 2023 when my Nan had her first collapse. It was post the second COVID-19 lockdown, and the thought of how many had been lost was very fresh in our minds. I honestly thought we was going to loose her. Her blood pressure had dropped down to 50/30, and she was drifting in and out of lucidity for the entire night

I remember being sat by her bed, and her talking about how she wished she could see some of her grandchildren again before she left, and that she had so many things she wished she could tell them. While we had told them about how unwell Nan was, some of them couldn't make it due to how far they had to travel. Thankfully she pulled through that night, but the seeds were planted about wanting to make a platform for people to tell their stories.

Several months later, she had a collapse and was rushed back into hospital. While she was in her and my mum recorded a video to send out to the grandkids, as she wasn't sure she would be discharged again. That video has since been watched so many times that many of us have memorised her words.

Months later, Nan has been in and out of hospital many times for several broken bones from falls, NSTEMI heart attacks, and more. She was telling me about one of my (many) cousins, who was watching the video she sent and quoting it back to her. She loved that something as simple as that had such a massive impact on his life, and that when he was scared of loosing her that it brought him some comfort that he'd always have a piece of her near by.

That moment sealed it. We decided we are going to bring that moment to everyone who needs it. Our business is all about helping people, what better place to help someone than this. We decided to build a platform where people can leave messages, leave snippets of their lives, and where people can look back on their legacy and remember those who came before.

Sentimentery was born.
